EL CASTILLO UNANUE / UNANUE CASTLE

Esta joya arquitectonica que se yergue solitaria en medio del campo, en terrenos del distrito de San Vicente de Cañete fue mandada a construir por Don Jose Unanue en 1843, hijo del sabio Hipolito Unanue quien habia heredado de la familia Landaburu-Belzunce las tierras de Isque de Gomez, Pepían y Cerro Blanco. Don Jose Unanue al empezar a administrar definitivamente las tierras de su padre, las llamó Hacienda Unanue y tras mandar derribar la anterior Casa Hacienda que se encontraba edificada sobre una antigua huaca pre-inca, empezo a eregir en ese mismo lugar su majestuoso Castillo, edificada en parte con piezas traidas de otro castillo en Alemania.

Debajo de este castillo, se encuentran tuneles y recintos subterraneos, que sirvieron mucho tiempo atras como calabozo, lugar de tortura a donde el aire ni la luz tenian entrada. Tambien se le uso como escondite para quienes huian de bandidos y corsarios. La primera carcel de Cañete tuvo funcionamiento en este lugar en 1924 y se cuenta que en ese entonces un centenar de comuneros del fundo cochahuasi por reclamar sus tierras fueron encerrados en sus calabozos y de ellos nunca nada mas se supo.

En el presente ya nadie habita el Castillo, mas sus recintos junto con sus vitrales, marmoles y rejas, cuentan a sus visitantes la historia que las envuelven. Fue declarado Monumento Historico Nacional en 1972.

This architectural gem that is standing lonely in the middle of the field, on land belonging to the district of San Vicente de Cañete was commissioned to build by Don Jose Unanue in 1843, son of the sage Hipolito Unanue, who had inherited of the family Landaburu-Belzunce, the lands of Isque de Gomez, Pepian and Cerro Blanco. When Don Jose Unanue started to manage the land of his father, called it "hacienda Unanue", after that, he ordered to demolish the previous Ranch House which was built on an ancient pre-Inca huaca, began to erect in the same place his magnificent castle, built in part with parts brought from another castle in Germany.

Below the castle, there are underground rooms and tunnels, which long ago served as a dungeon, a place of torture without air and light neither. That place was also used as a hideout for those fleeing bandits and pirates. The first jail of Cañete was in operation in these dungeon in 1924, where a hundred communards of the cochahuasi fundo were locked, for to claim their land and of them never anything else was known.

In the present nobody inhabits the castle, but its premises with its stained glass, marble and gates, tells your visitors the history that surrounds them. It was declared a National Historic Monument in 1972.
